Elastane doesn’t take up much space on a label. It usually appears as a small percentage: 2%, 5%, occasionally 10%. That little number deserves more attention than it gets, though, because elastane is very often the first fiber in a garment to wear out, and when it goes, the fit goes with it.
What Is Elastane? Is It the Same as Spandex?
Yes, they’re the same thing. Elastane and spandex are two names for one fiber, with elastane on European labels and spandex on US ones. Lycra is a well-known trademark for the same fiber, so if a tag says Lycra, you’re looking at elastane too.
Elastane is a segmented polyurethane. Its flexible blocks uncoil when you stretch the fabric and pull back when you let go, which is how the fiber can stretch to several times its length and still return to shape. It’s almost never used alone. A fine elastane thread is usually wrapped into a yarn of cotton, polyester, nylon, or viscose, and that host fiber is what your skin actually touches.
How Does Elastane Behave?
On its own, elastane absorbs almost nothing and breathes poorly. At just a few percent of a blend, it changes the fit more than the feel. It pulls fabric close to your body and closes the air gap that normally lets heat and moisture escape.
That’s why a 95% cotton, 5% elastane jersey breathes noticeably less than the same cotton knitted loosely, and why the denser fabric is slower to dry.
Why Does Stretchy Clothing Go Baggy?
Because elastane tends to break down before the rest of the garment does. Heat is the main cause: hot washes, tumble dryers, and irons can damage the fiber’s flexible segments, and once that happens, the fabric stops springing back. You’ll notice it as bagged knees, a slack waistband, or leggings that sag by mid-morning.
Chlorine does the same thing even faster, which is why swimwear often ages quickly. The result is a garment whose cotton or polyester is still perfectly intact, but that no longer fits the way it used to.
What Does Elastane Mean for Your Skin?
Elastane makes up a small share of the fabric, so the host fiber and the fit do most of the work here. Snug synthetic fabric can hold heat and moisture in continuous contact with your skin, and skin that stays warm and damp for long stretches may be more prone to irritation.
One study is worth knowing about, with some context attached. In 2022, the Center for Environmental Health, a consumer-advocacy group, commissioned independent laboratory testing of activewear and estimated notable wearer exposure to BPA from some polyester-spandex garments. Cotton, wool, and linen in the same testing showed none. It was a small, advocacy-commissioned sample that estimated exposure rather than measuring fabric directly, so it’s best read as a signal rather than a verdict. What Should You Check on the Label?
Read the percentage with some healthy skepticism. Small numbers in a blend are where labeling accuracy tends to slip the most, and labels can sometimes mislead. In the EU’s inspection campaign published in June 2026, 37% of the 132 garments tested across eight countries were mislabeled, and blends of natural and man-made fibers failed 64% of the time, compared with 15% for single-fiber natural claims.
What elastane is blended with. The host fiber is the one against your skin, so it deserves most of your attention.
“Stretch” with no elastane listed. If a product description promises stretch but no elastane appears on the fiber line, the stretch usually comes from the knit structure itself.

How Should You Care for Elastane?
Wash cool, always. Skip the dryer when you can, and never run an iron over an elastane blend. If your swimwear contains elastane, rinse it in cold, fresh water after chlorine or salt, then dry it flat and out of the sun.
One easy habit that helps: give stretch garments a day off between wears so the fiber has time to recover.
