Cotton is breathable and absorbent, so it can help move heat and moisture away from your skin instead of trapping them. When a cotton garment irritates, the cause is often a seam, a stitched tag, elastic, or a finish rather than the fiber itself.
Cotton is the most familiar word on almost any clothing label, and it earns that place. It’s a seed fiber: each strand is a single elongated plant cell that grows around the seed of the cotton plant, then is cleaned and spun into yarn. Chemically, cotton is close to pure cellulose.
What varies underneath that one word is staple length, meaning how long the individual fibers are. Two tops can both read 100% cotton and still age very differently.
How it behaves
Cotton absorbs moisture into the fiber rather than shedding it, so it can take on a lot of water and release it slowly. In everyday warmth, that’s exactly what you want: sweat moves off your skin and into the cloth.
During sustained exertion or in cold rain, though, that same quality works against you. Saturated cotton stays wet and stays against you, which is why hikers generally avoid it in demanding conditions.
Air passes through cotton easily, although the weave sets the limit. Cotton is also one of the few fibers that’s stronger wet than dry, which helps it survive years of regular washing. Drape depends more on construction than on the fiber: poplin stands up, jersey falls soft, and denim does neither.
Does cotton pill?
Yes, moderately, and it fades too. Those are cotton’s two most common ways of showing wear. Pilling, the little fuzz balls of loose fiber, tends to appear first at collars, cuffs, and anywhere a bag strap rubs. A WRAP and Defra garment survey analyzed in the Journal of Cleaner Production in 2022 found pilling and color fading to be the top two measured causes of garment failure, ahead of holes and seam failure.
The encouraging part is that yarn quality makes a real difference. Combed, long-staple, tightly spun cotton has fewer loose fiber ends to work free, so it stays smooth longer. Is it really 100% cotton?

A Dutch government-commissioned Circle Economy study published in 2019 scanned more than 10,000 discarded garments and found fiber labels likely to mislead in 41% of cases. Cotton-polyester blend labels tested accurate only about 23% of the time, and roughly a third of cotton-rich blends overstated their cotton content. In the EU market-surveillance campaign published in June 2026, inspectors found 37% of 132 tested garments across eight countries mislabeled, with blends failing 64% of the time against 15% for single natural fiber claims.
Before those numbers send you second-guessing your whole closet, remember that a few simple checks cover most of it. Watch for elastane at 2% to 5%, which changes care and stretch recovery. Look for polyester in anything sold as easy-care, and for viscose or modal added for drape. And if a garment claims to be organic, look for a GOTS® license number beside the logo. Care that extends it
Wash cool with a full load, turn dark colors inside out, and keep cotton out of high dryer heat, which drives both shrinkage and fading. Skip fabric softener on towels, since it can coat the fiber and reduce absorbency.
