Lynen, said like linen

Lynen is an app that tells you what a garment is actually made of. You scan it, and you see what the label claims next to what independent laboratory testing found. It is made by Lynen Labs LLC.
Two things tend to bring people to this page. Either you were looking for the app and want to be sure this is the right one, or you typed a word you already know well and landed somewhere unexpected. Both are covered below, in that order.
What Lynen is
Scan a garment's barcode, and Lynen shows you two things side by side: the fiber composition the label claims, and the fiber composition independent laboratory testing found. When the two disagree, we say so plainly. When we have not checked a garment yet, we say that too.
The testing is not ours. We commission independent accredited laboratories, the kind that hold ISO 17025 accreditation and work to the established methods, ISO 1833 for the quantitative analysis and AATCC 20 and 20A for fiber identification. We do not operate a lab, and we did not invent a measurement. We bought the established one and put the answer where a shopper can see it.
Brands do not pay to appear and cannot buy a better result. Coverage grows garment by garment, with submissions setting the queue, so the honest description of where we are is: growing, and openly incomplete.
Similar names, different shelves
A few apps carry names close to this one, sitting in adjacent corners of the same aisle. Brand-rating apps score a company on its published policies and commitments. Label-scanner apps read the tag back to you in a friendlier format. Both do useful work, and neither is trying to do what this one does.
The line that separates them is short. Lynen starts where the label ends: independent laboratory testing of the actual garment's fiber composition, shown next to the claim on the tag. If that is the thing you were looking for, this is the one.
Said like linen, on purpose
Lynen is pronounced the way linen is. LIN-en. Same sound, different spelling.
That is not an accident. The fiber line on a tag is the whole subject of this app, and linen is one of the fibers people choose deliberately, pay a premium for, and then have no practical way of confirming. Naming the company after that sound felt honest about what we spend our days on.
So if you came here looking for the fabric, stay a moment. The fabric has a labeling story of its own, and it is a useful one.
What linen actually is
Linen comes from flax, a plant fiber cultivated for textiles for thousands of years. A few properties are worth knowing before you buy it:
- It is highly breathable, which is why it reads as cool in hot weather
- It takes up moisture and releases it readily, so it does not hold damp against you the way a synthetic does
- It wrinkles quickly and visibly, and that crease is the fiber behaving normally rather than a fault in the garment
- It softens with washing, so a stiff new piece is usually not the piece you end up with
- It is frequently blended, most often with cotton for softness or with viscose for drape and a lower price
That last point is where the fiber and the app meet.
Blends are where linen labels get shaky
Blending linen makes commercial sense. It cuts the wrinkling, softens the hand, and lowers the cost. It also turns a one-number claim into a two-number claim, and precision is where labels fall apart.
EU market-surveillance inspectors ran a coordinated campaign across eight countries, published in June 2026, testing 132 garments against their own labels. Overall, 37% were mislabeled. Blends of natural and man-made fibers failed 64% of the time. Claims of 100% of a single natural fiber failed 15% of the time.
The campaign did not publish a linen-specific figure, and we are not going to invent one. What the pattern says is general and still useful: a linen-viscose shirt sits squarely in that natural-plus-man-made category, and a linen-cotton shirt is still a two-number claim with more places for a number to drift. A garment labeled 100% linen is the claim with the better odds, and 15% is not zero.
That gap between a claim on a tag and a measurement from a lab is the entire reason this app exists, whichever word you typed to get here.
