One load of laundry, 700,000 plastic fibres

A single wash of synthetics can release 700,000 plastic microfibres. What sheds, what doesn't, and the habits that cut the number.


One load of laundry. That's all it takes. Plymouth University researchers found in 2016 that a single wash of polyester, nylon or acrylic clothing can release more than 700,000 plastic microfibres into the water.

Not a light dusting of lint. Seven hundred thousand fragments, per load, from an ordinary machine running an ordinary cycle. They're too small to be caught reliably, which is how pieces of a fleece jacket end up a very long way from a laundry basket.

The variable you control is what goes into the drum. Plastic microfibres come from plastic fibres: polyester, nylon, acrylic. Cotton, wool and linen shed too, but what they shed isn't plastic. Quietly, the composition of your wardrobe is the composition of your wash water.

A few habits shrink the number without replacing a single garment. Wash synthetics less often; airing sportswear between wears is usually enough. Run cooler, shorter cycles with fuller loads, because friction and agitation drive shedding. And keep synthetic pieces in service longer, since making and discarding clothes carries a footprint of its own.

None of it works, though, if you don't know what your clothes are made of. This is where mislabelling stops being an abstract consumer-rights story. A Dutch government-commissioned study found composition labels misleading in 41% of cases, so the "cotton" top you've been washing without a second thought may be shedding polyester every week. A Lynen scan settles the question before the machine starts.

There's clearly appetite for this kind of change. McKinsey found in 2020 that 57% of UK and German consumers say they've already adjusted their lifestyle for environmental reasons. Laundry might be the easiest adjustment on the list. You don't have to buy anything, give anything up, or read a single care symbol differently. You just have to know what's actually in the drum.
